“Our Dad has been suffering from dementia for the past couple of years. We want him to be at home and independent for as long as possible. Whilst in his environment and his routine he has been able to cope. However, as his speech, memory and understanding deteriorate, the basic things in life become more challenging. Its not so bad (yet) that he needs a carer: he needs someone to check he has enough food, the food he has is in date, to buy food, to read and explain emails from his electricity provider, to speak to the utilities on his behalf, set up his TV in lockdown, to liaise with the local garage and, perhaps most importantly, company. Dad gets anxious over issues that he wouldn’t fuss over if he was well. He can get fixated and he needs four or five patient explanations to understand all is ok. When we are busy and out of reach, Louise provides regular and consistent in person support. She provides a calmness that a dementia sufferer living by themselves so desperately needs.
The service is akin to an executive assistant for the elderly. Someone who can help with the admin that keeps the home running as it should. But crucially its assistance with compassion. It not only makes my Dad’s life more comfortable but has relieved the strain on me, my brother and his friends.
